Wainscoting

Wainscoting is a decorative and functional wall treatment that involves covering the lower portion of a wall with wood panels or other materials. It is often used to add texture, visual interest, and a touch of elegance to interior spaces.

Styles

Raised Panel

Features panels that appear raised above the frame.

These panels are elevated from the surrounding surface, offering a traditional yet elegant finish. Perfect for classic interiors, they add depth and structure to any room with a timeless appeal.

Flat Panel

A simpler, more modern style with recessed panels.

Offering a sleek, minimalist look, flat panels provide subtle sophistication. Ideal for contemporary designs, they create clean lines and a refined atmosphere in both modern and transitional spaces.

VJ and Silhouette Panels

A combination of vertical grooves and contoured designs, blending rustic charm with decorative elegance.

VJ panels bring a timeless, country-style appeal with their classic vertical grooves, while silhouette panels add depth and character with graceful convex or concave shapes. They offer a stylish way to enhance walls with texture and dimension, whether you prefer a traditional or more decorative look.

Recessed Panelling

A sleek and understated design featuring inset panels for a refined, architectural look.

Recessed panelling offers a sophisticated touch with its clean lines and subtle depth. The inset design creates a structured, elegant aesthetic that suits both classic and contemporary interiors. Perfect for adding texture without overpowering a space, this style brings a timeless and polished finish to walls.

Board and Batten

Wide vertical boards separated by narrower strips (battens) for a clean, structured look.

The board and batten style introduces a sense of verticality and simplicity. With clean, straight lines, it offers a modern take on classic architectural design, making it perfect for both rustic and contemporary interiors.

Overlay Panel

Decorative style featuring panels that sit on top of the wall for added texture.

Overlay panels provide a versatile and elegant solution to transform plain walls into beautiful focal points. With various patterns and finishes, they enhance your home’s aesthetic while adding visual interest and texture.

Elements

Wainscoting typically consists of the following elements:

Panels

Flat or raised sections that form the main part of the wainscoting.

Trims and Stiles

Horizontal (trims) and vertical (stiles) framing pieces that surround the panels.

Chair Rail

A horizontal molding that caps the top of the wainscoting, often placed at about one-third the height of the wall. It also protects the wall from chair backs.

Skirting Board

A molding at the bottom of the wainscoting that provides a finished look and transitions to the floor.

Materials

Wood

The traditional material for wainscoting, available in various styles and finishes.

MDF

Cost-effective alternative that is easy to paint and best suited for dry areas.

Polyurethane Foam

A flexible foam material ideal for sharp curves and curved staircases.
